The AJN Book of the Year program is a prestigious competition that garners the attention of the nursing community and supporting healthcare publishers. Since 1969, AJN has announced its annual list of the best in nursing publishing. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges ranging from college professors to clinicians to nursing executives. Awards are given for first, second and third place in 20 categories.

The Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing won in the categories of Advanced Practice Nursing and Palliative Care and Hospice. As a reminder, this resource is a comprehensive textbook on the art and science of palliative care nursing. The content is relevant for specialty hospice agencies and palliative care programs, as well as generalist knowledge for schools of nursing, oncology, critical care, and pediatric. According to the editors, the audience is nurses whose primary practice is palliative care. However, this book would certainly be useful to nursing students, nurses whose primary practice is not palliative care such as those working in the hospital, oncology, cardiology, or long term care settings. It also would be a useful reference for colleagues in social work and spiritual care. The editors are internationally known experts in the field of palliative nursing. The many contributing authors were carefully selected for their experience and prior contributions to the field.
