In a recent librarian Review of STAT!Ref in Doody’s Collection Development Monthly by Noreen Mulcahy, MLIS, AHIP, Lead Health Sciences Librarian, Technical Services at Mount Carmel Health Sciences Library in Ohio, Noreen touches on all of the positives of STAT!Ref and Teton Data Systems: the ease of custom purchases, flexible options, responsive customer service, quick updates when available and great content.
The review states, “By providing a large collection of e-resources covering all levels of need, STAT!Ref is geared to nursing and medical students and point-of-care health providers alike.” It goes on to explain, “The platform offers flexibility through website and mobile app connectivity. Once setting up a personal account through the user’s library, it can be tied to the STAT!Ref app, offering anywhere access. The app is available for iOS and Android. There is a required renewal of the account, and users are notified via email.”
She also explains, “The content offered by STAT!Ref includes authoritative titles, many that have DCT ratings. Titles include Red Book Atlas of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, 4th edition (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2020); Davis’s Drug Guide for Nurses, 17th edition, Vallerand (F.A. Davis, 2021); Greenfield’s Surgery: Scientific Principles & Practice, 6th edition, Mulholland (Wolters Kluwer, 2017); Guidelines for Perioperative Practice (AORN, 2021); Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, 28th edition (Wolters Kluwer, 2006); and Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, 24th edition, Venes (F.A. Davis, 2021). EBMcalc is also part of the collection. This resource is included in every subscription and features over 520 calculators, clinical criteria sets, and decision trees.” This list gives us an indication of top, must-have titles and resources in her opinion.
The reviewer points out that “This resource is best suited for nursing and medical schools as well as hospital systems. STAT!Ref resources are available through IP ranges. Users can access the ebooks through the ILS or a link to the platform on a library website. As mentioned above, the app can be tied in with the library’s STAT!Ref titles. STAT!Ref offers two subscription models: a la carte and Core Collections. With the former, clients can select as many titles as they want. Agreements are set up on an annual basis. In the a la carte model, clients have the opportunity to add or drop titles at the time of renewal. STAT!Ref allows flexibility in concurrent users – from one, two, five, seven, 10, 15, and then in increments of five. While STAT!Ref is affordable, they do not provide itemized pricing. STAT!Ref provides monthly and usage reports upon request. Users can request monthly reports to be sent automatically.”
In summary, she states “STAT!Ref offers a flexible and affordable way to build an ebook collection. The titles in STAT!Ref’s collection are varied and current.
